33 sec tiny lesson -The Almost Magic 3rd fret - Read the text

On IVI guitars: GDG, DAD, EBE, etc.
the third fret is almost magic.

Easy six note 3rd fret pattern- can open or end a song orsometimes work in the middle.

1. pluck the small string fretted at the 3rd fret

2. pluck the same string open

3. pluck the middle string fretted at the 3d

4. pluck the same string open

5. pluck the big string fretted at the 3rd

6. pluck the big string open
---
Generally any sting played open (unfretted) or frettedat the 3rd is going to sound good in a jam or instrumental.

Try it- play open and fretted at the 3rd fret strings in any order. Can also throw in a strum with all 3 fretted.

Neat posts , Tiny Bites !!   I really appreciate that Keni Lee commented and gave further information ......validating your lesson .   I also appreciate when Keni Lee posts lessons and don't care a bit if he takes a few seconds to plug a CD !!!    These lessons that are posted are one of the best things about the CBG nation , in my less than humble opinion .  I feel it shows the spirit of the nation .  More than appreciating what music people can play ...... appreciating that "You " or anyone can play a CBG ...and enjoy what "They" can play !!!

Thanks guys.   I am a Keni Lee fan and no offense taken.  Buddy notes.

Learning what I have has been a slow process.  I seem to learn best in tiny bites.   The goal with these vids and some more to come is help beginners and some intermediates with concise little lessons or ideas.

I encourage anyone to learn from Keni Lee, John McNair and the other established teachers.  I have good dvds from both those fine players.

Hey guys nice stuff... I am always up for hearing how someone goes about learning how to play better.... I have to stick up for my buddy Keni Lee though... I have written to him an number of times with questions and always received one of his standard... "enjoy or enjoy your practice lines" I never viewed it as condescending. I am really grateful for the hours and hours of effort he has put into making his instructional information available..  It is true that I have built a number of CBG's that Keni has used in his video's and I am a friend of his. But that's because his free videos got me into CBG's.... I stalked him to let me send him one just so I could get him to tell me how thought it sounded and how I could make them better. I have bought each of his DVD/CD and in many cases have given them along with CBG's I have sold... My main point of commenting is that I am in favor of anyone that wants to promote our instruments and how to play them better. Also to say the email and written comments are sometimes a hard place to demonstrate clear intent... I hope that everyone is on the same page and the point is to make us all better players of the instrument we love. after all " it's not about the box it's about the music"....

Nice lil short and to the point vids your're doing.

If I were just starting this would be the type of lesson that would keep me drawn in. Simple and easy to understand.

Simple is good.

Yes, These are commonly referred to as the Blues Player's Buddy notes.

A common scale (Minor Pentatonic) used in playing the Blues consists of 5 tones.

Considering string 1 and 3 open are the same first tone from the major scale, anything played on one string can be applied to the other.

The 5 tones are: (String 1 is the highest string)

String 1 - fret 5 / fret 3 / open

String 2 - fret 3 / open

String 3 - fret 3 / open

Or reverse this:

String 3 - fret 5 / fret 3 / open

String 2 - fret 3 / open

String 1 - fret 3 / open

I certainly use them all the time. (Please check out this arrangement)

A simple suggestion would be to find the same 5 notes, but in other positions on the fingerboard.

Enjoy your practice, Keni Lee
