Tambourine insert tunneled 5th string banjo

I removed the jangles from a 10" Remo tambourine and inserted it into an old banjo pot. The 5th string is tunneled under the fretboard and emerges in the peg...

Holy cats - I just got time to watch this and it's the best 2:27 of my day! You can play the stuffing out of that thing and sounds fantastic to boot. Always thought the tambourine would be a practical banjo head, but I don't see many old ones lying around here in Chicago. I'm really curious how you fixed the intonation point and routed that 5th string. I'll have to give it a think. Great instrument, great sound, great playing, thanks!

Wow Jim!

Never cease to impress! Nice build!

And the drop thumb clawhammer technique is quite smooth! But downstroke with picks? Now that's somewhat unusual! Adds volume and brightness. Id like to hear that banjer played with bare fingers though. Just for "old times sake" (hehe)

Build question for ya? The tunnel details. Have a tube, or just drilled out?

Yep!, well done Jim, as always a fine sounding and looking instrument being played well :-)

Thanks so much for your kind words Donkey! The builders and players I like the most are ones who obviously love what they are doing. I hope my love for making and playing these instruments comes across and maybe inspires others.

Thanks Unc. Appalachian old time sound is what I strive for. The tunneled 5th string idea has been around a pretty long time - I forget who I stole it from.

Nice, Jim.  Good looking banjer, very pleasing tone and good volume.   Maybe it's the (good) way you play it, but it seems more of an Appalachian or old timey sound - not so metallic.

Neat string routing idea.  Was that your invention:

Thank you Jason.

Thanks Danny. A tambourine is just an incomplete banjo in my twisted mind!
