Solutions for Aspiring Musicians with Disabled Hands

In response to the numerous emails I receive from viewers who are interested in playing guitar, but are concerned due to limited function of their hands or fingers, I made this informative video to encourage them in their quest and offer possible solutions. Please feel free to write if I can be of further assistance. Enjoy the Joy of Music.

Yes you can!  :-D

Back in 1982 i had a very serious accident which left me with limited use of my left hand...owch. It is still pretty bad but since then over the years i have learned to ski, became a black belt in self defence, worked up to a high grade in my current profession and mastered, though i had to learn left-handed, the basic rudiments of electric guitar, bass and drums, though nothing really fancy ! I learned how to strip down, service and rebuild these instruments, and am currently working on my first CBG build, albeit slowly...(-;

Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is truly inspiring the tenacity of the human spirit, and how people over come their limitations and sucessfully succeed in their quest. Enjoy.

Hello Norm. Thank you for your response and comment. I met Tom Doughty while I was attending a week long guitar workshop called IGS at Columbia Univ. NYC. Not only is he a very good professional musician, but he was full very inspiring energy too. He would attach a hand bicycle to his wheelchair and zoom all around the campus.
As for songs, just start listening to more old Blues; Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Son House, Fred Mcdowell, Blind Willie Johnson, etc to get inspired. The more you listen, the more it gets into your head. Try using your knowledge of the fingerboard to find or create the ideas that enter your mind. Be patient and persistent and your arrangements will slowly come into focus. Keep doing what you can do, and keep trying to reach a little further out each time to do what you can't do. Keep the Faith. Enjoy.

Hi Keni,

Wow! What an inspiration. My limitation is that I have used a wheelchair for a number of years. Consequently 'wear and tear' on my joints and numbness in my fingers have made it impossible to finger the frets with much accuracy. So I play a four string fretted instrument lap style. I am able to use the slide 90% of the time but sometimes fret with my thumb and forefinger to make a 7th chord. If you can suggest some songs to play, that would be cool. So far I have tackled 'I can't be satisfied', 'Walking Blues', 'Sitting on top of the World', 'Come on in my Kitchen' and a very nice rendition of Tower of Song by Leonard Cohen. All of which I have arranged to suit my needs. I find CD5 a great help!

Hey Keni, I dont know if u saw my entry to the doubleneck contest here or the video i did, but this fretting arrangement I've come up with could really help ppl with limited motor function..
There is a patent pending on it, but this is only about ppl making a dollar off it, not building for personal use or anything..
