Well 407bug, the "trick" is called diatonic fret scale, as compared to the guitar's chromatic scale. In diatonic scale you only have whole notes and the "major" chords. Often you will see diatonic scales with the 6+, or the six and a half fret. That allows for sharps or flats. Here is a handy tool that gives you fret spacing... http://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator

You got to love an electric! Nice work buddy - sounding fantastic. I've just started recording some celtic inspired tracks for a production company so can appreciate what you've created. I'll post on the Nation the stuff they dont want :)
