My First Attempt at Building (and Playing) a Washtub Bass

I have always been curious about washtub basses so... I finally decided to build one. In this video, I go over the parts I used and how to put it all together. This should be helpful to anyone trying to build their first washtub bass.

Lucky you have good tools Kale. Makes it look easy. I love washtub Bass, I find it’s not hard at all to pluck right in tune with other instruments. Denny Hansen, my band mate for over 30 years, made a beautiful tub Bass in wood. It looks like the predecessor to the metal tubs. It sounds so mellow. Stephanie, Denny’s Spouse, has become sooo good at her wood tub masterpiece. Now I’ve adapted Denny’s wood bass to a box bass. The Thunder Box Bass. It has some of that great tone plus many ways to play it. Putting one foot up on the tub gets old fast. I prefer to sit or stand alongside my box bass. Soon as I feel a little better I have found many great boxes to build more Thunder. :*)

Nicely done AD. The idea can certainly be applied to more than just washtubs.

Thanks John and Doug. I'm glad you guys liked it. I managed to find some round weedwacker wick so I may try that. The nylon cord seems to work pretty well though.

Great job on this video, my wife even wanted to watch it! That rarely happens. You made it look pretty simple (to build!). I wonder how much difference the line you use for a string makes. I still have 4 weights of weed wacker line from my weed wacker bass and 200 lb test fishing line from my KastKing chuggers. Just say the word and I’ll send you some!

Ha ha. Thanks Rope. Getting the notes is definitely a lot different than other bass instruments. It's more like playing a jug than a bass. What you see in this video was literally the first minute or so of me learning to play so it's really bad. I've already gotten better but I'm far from an expert.

You do a great job putting together a how-to video, PoornessStudios! Make it look easy... but my favorite part was your look of seeming consternation while tryin’ to play the darn thing and your little thought bubble: “ This is hard.”
