Thanks everyone.....this tragic part of WW1 is not well recalled in history. There are a number of versions, and this is a fairly short one of a brave Aussie soldier who lost both legs but survived to tell his story.

You did a great job with that.

Thanks for the lyrics, Sammy.  They are certainly good.   And bad.

"Well done Sammy", an appropriate song for this time of the year (and century!)

When I was a young man I carried a pack
I lived the free life of a rover
From the Murrays gree basin to the dusty out back
I waltzed my Matilda all over

Then in 1915 my country said son
There's no time for roving there's work to be done
And they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played waltzing Matilda
As the ship pulled away from the Quay
And amidst all the cheers , flag waving and tears
We set off for Galippoli

How well I remember that terrible day
When our bloodstained the sand and the water
And how in that he'll that they called Sulva Bay
We were butchered like lambs to the slaughter

Johnny Turk he was waiting he'd primed himself well
He showered us with bullets and rained us with shells
And in 5 minutes flat he'd blown us to hell
He nearly blew us back to Australia

And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we stopped to bury our slain
We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again

Then a big Turkish she'll knocked me arse over head
And when I awoke in my hospital bed
I saw what it had done and I wished I was dead
Then I knew there was worse things than dying

And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered they just stood and stared
And they turned their faces away

And so now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
And I see my old comrades how proudly they march
Erving old dreams and past glories

But the old men March slowly their bones stiff and sore
Tired old men from a tired old war
And the Young people ask what are they marching for
And I ask myself the same question

But the band played Waltzing Matilda
And the old men still answer the call
But year by year more old men disappear
Soon no one will march there at all
