Yeah Steve, I've got a friend who's a killer Scruggs style/bluegrass player and he can't quite get clawhammer. I can't play his style worth a durn so it depends on what sounds appeal to you. Like any new technique it does take some work.

Thanks RTZ. It's been documented that this style is used by African string players and I suspect it was what was being played by the folks on plantations on gourd banjos. That's part of the reason American traditional music has such a different feel from the Scotch/Irish music that it descended from. The styles from Africa and the British Isles got blended together to make something new and uniquely American.

well done sir such a important part of American music. The 5 string banjo can throw out some notes. You can do similar stuff with 4 string banjo but it's not the same.

I hear you James O. I had to sit down for a few hours and think about how to explain this stuff in a short time. It helps that I've taught it before but not in a 5 min. vid. The good thing about teaching is it makes you look at what your doing, analyze it and remember what a struggle it was when you were learning.
