Uncle J's last video was Goin' down the Road Feelin' Bad and that got us into a discussion about clawhammer style. Unc probably already knows most of this stuff but I figured I'd do this and maybe someone will be interested.

Please excuse the singing in this video.  It is a practice session I saved.  Still working on it.

I've tuned this 5 stringer to Gmin and alternate up-picking the D or B flat string.  Thumb hits the bass note on the quarters.  More of a guitar strum sound than banjo.

Hm Eric, that sounds like it would work out to pretty much the same feel. It would work ok on a 3 or 4 string git where you'd get a bass note first with the thumb but probably not on a 5 string banjo because you'd be getting that high 5th string first. There's lots of ways to do stuff and now I gotta go try thumb, strum, up pick on the banjo to see what happens!

Man, I've been bummin' with my thumb.  I'm going to have to try and switch it up.  I have the same rhythm, but thumb, strum, up-pick with a finger.

Cool Unc, I think this is a style that can be used with just about any number of strings and tunings. I prefer to use it with open tunings but it works with regular 6 string standard tuning too.

Jim, I tried the slow speed bum dit tee on a GDg and yeah, that works pretty well.  Also tried it on my old DGB White Owl.  Not a banjo sound of course, but certainly a multi-use picking pattern.

Thanks BUG. It's not so tricky as working in a sausage factory!

Sounds sweet...thanks for the bum ditty lesson ...looks tricky

Thanks Rob. Hey, I don't know if you saw the vid of the 4 string with your scroll saw work on it. It's an original called "Would Ya Let Me"

Ha, Eric. I thought you'd relate to that comment. I need to be more careful in the shop! Usually though it's a cramping problem that prompts me to switch fingers. When I have a hammer accident it usually only affects the fretting fingers.

Cool Unc. That half speed is about where I start folks off if I'm teaching them. The speed takes a little while but hey, like I said, nothing wrong about splitting the stroke into 2 beats. I'm fixin' to do a demo of claw on 3 string tuned GDg with that thumb drone on a low note. Sounds totally different but I like it. I think it would work with that gDB tuning as well since it's all about the rythym.
