Thanks much everyone. Hey Wes and Will my way of thinking is that it's never too late. I played rock & roll guitar since I was 15 and didn't start banjo till I was in my 50's. Almost 65 now - still younger than Unc! Started on fiddle when I was almost 60 and for 2 years I thought I'd never get it but it's almost to where I can stand to listen to myself now. You gotta enjoy the journey!

Well Wes, I didn't start building CBGs until I was 68 and trying to play a few months latter. I am 72 now, so you got a good start on me.

Love the way you to it.  I have been trying the claw hammer for 4 years now with no success at all.  I think I waited too long in life to start playing.  I can build'em, but I can't play 'em.  By the way you play, you must have started very young.

Sounds good when you do it, Jim.  I don't have a real banjo yet.   Going to borrow one.   I've been practicing on uke and I am getting it.  I can kind of do the melody and what you told us helps me understand better.  I like both the slow pace and the fast pace you demonstrated.   Thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Grandpa Jones would wail away on this and never, ever worry about tring to play melodies. This gets called "frailing" sometimes when it's more about laying down the rythym to accompany the singing.
