Cheers mate , the top wood is Zebrano - yep the red one is Paduak and the Dark Brown Blackish looking one is Imbuya Glad you like them :-) just the knobs to do now which is the hardest of them all - heres a picture of the Veneers before i glued them up earlier
i have to glue these six Veneers together then tomorrow un clamp them cut it into 4 strips glue and stack them and re Clamp then on saturday cut it into two and start turning the knobs a lot of work but all being well they should look cool as :-) juju.
Josh, I think it might have been you that told me that you use a chisel or a rasp to shape heels and heads... I dunno, my alzheimers is kicking in. Anyhow, I found a bit today that you might be interested in.
Vermont American rotary rasp. Fits on a drill or drill press or some sort of 1/4" chuck device. Part no 16681 if you are interested. I got mine at Home Depot but cant find it online.
Josh, thank you very much for the excellent how-to series: in a couple of cases, I can see exactly where I went wrong on a previous build and how to fix it (and avoid the error the next time). I'm even inspired to try cutting a scarf joint with my backsaw (no bandsaw or other power saws in the shop). I think you've raised the overall quality of the nation's building substantially by posting this series.
Josh, thanks for the reply comment on "open mic". Re
ally I have kind of been in lurk mode for a while, mostly I have been jammin at home, learning some new songs. I try to get on the nation every couple a days and keep up on whats going on, It has done me good to take a break though. Keep up your building man, your axes are awesome
Hey man, thanks for the comment on the heel block. That one turned out really nice with the wood grain & color.
That's one thing I've really noticed about myself: I never cared much about the grain patterns in a guitar neck until I started making 'em myself. Now, whenever I pick up my Fen- er, uh, Jack-, er, damn! A store bought guitar, I notice the grain in ways I never used to.
That 6 stringer you built for Shane is beyond killer, by the way. Very inspiring.
thankyou Josh! I appreciate your expert advice I will work up to the hand wound beauties I have seen that are singular works of art....;-) auto insurance stole my fun money couple days ago...LOL......Laurie
COOL---this is tecnically "as a 12 string guitar is to a 6 string", only in your case 6 to 3......that would be a good name, 6 to 3...it is way cool. a beaut..it this a sound sample opening? this guitar?...what was the pickup used?..I hope to build a 6 string that IS a 6 string (I know, I'm in the wrong camp here! LOL)..wondering what sort of pickup I should aspire to that my pocket can afford as well.....again--sweet guit!! I just received my first box--ordered a chohiba..almost too pretty to cut into! ..:-) Laurie
Picked up one of your 6 string Cohiba guitars from some guy on ebay a month ago. Beautiful instrument, really roars! I play CBG shows with Gerry Thompson around Philly, will definitely be giving your piece a public work out in the months to come.
Hey Josh, I'm getting much better at french polish now. I've applied the finish to a Punch box that I'm doing for my mom and tho its not completely smooth, it's like glass. Oooooo how I love that finish.
Hi Josh, thanks for the comment, the plank has a light coat of black wood dye sanded off, then red wood dye on top, with mohagany wood dye on the back. Formby's tong oil. I sanded with 330 grit, then 000 steel wool before the finish was put on. I too, can't keep my eyes off that cheery wood top.
I've been meaning to do a cover of this since I got my David Bowie Stylophone last Christmas. This song is outside my vocal range and difficult to sing, but ...
