I used sandpaper wrapped around a block of wood. In the end, they were perfect enough for me. I kept a metal ruler handy and checked them with the edge of that now and again.
Some people use the flat type of toothpick, but I've found they are made of softer wood and are inconsistent in size, which bugged me.
Funny you should suggest I try my hand at a ukelele -- I had just ordered a set of uke strings to build one for my daughter. She really liked your video. I've got a set of 4-on-a-plate tuners on the bench, so nothing holding me back!
Thanks,
I'm currently building a Manditar that is the size of a Mandolin but has six strings as a Guitar.I'm new at this Cigar Box thing and the neck has proven to be my challenge.
hi shelly i can rip the clip from your youtube video but it will be better if you post the mp3 on the player on your page. that way when i add it to the player on the WCBN people can link back to your page. let me know if you want me to email you an mp3(i probably won't get a chance til next week) or if you want to use the one you already have , which would be cool cause then i'll get to hear them both.
check the player on the WCBN page and click on a name in the "added by" column to see how it works. i'm e guertin.
shelley i'm not a purist that feels all the music has to be played on a cbg. if you have a version on a regular uke that would be fine. i'm planning to nip an audio clip from your youtube video to listen to . that version captures a special bit of you playing an instrument you made yourself. i think that is what this movement is all about.
Yes indeed, we are rare over in this litle country but there are some of us out there building and playing cigareboxes hehehe, lets just call us pioneers instead of strange people ;)
Yeah sure, i have a 6 string cigarebox lapsteel and a fourstringer teabox guitar lying around i'd be glad to lend you for the exibition, maybe even a new build by then i can finish over there as a workshop part, just let me know when. I'd be glad to help give these cool little instruments the apriciation they deserve.
You should check a guy out on Youtube called:" Gijsforever " ,he's lives here too and he's got a square homemade upright bass wich is realy cool, he even does a cover of Junkyard Fever on it so check him out. I think he'd be a great addition to your planned event.
Thanks and looking forewards on hearing more about your homemade instruments event!
Hey Shelly, If you stay with the friction peg approach I have a tip I learned from an old mountain dulcimer maker. In "the day" they all used friction pegs and most of them carved or sanded the taper into them. I know you can purchase "peg dope" today for violin pegs, but applying a combination of soap and chalk works very well. I don't mean to make a concoction either... you just rub on the soap or scribble the chalk on the shiny friction point part of the peg. Tuning seems to mix the two and gives a smooth action when you get the right balance. Again, keep up the good work, and when are you going to share another song?
Loved your video. Great little uke you made.
Those bobbins seem perfect. I'm guessing you don't have a tapered reamer and peg shaver, eh? There a little pricey but can be made from some old scissors blades.
Amazing singing too... you have some pipes...;-)
Keep up the great work.
Thanks for "friending" me, Shelley . . . and No, I'm afraid that unfortunately there's not likely to be another NY Fingerlakes Cigarbox Guitar festival this year. (I've got too many irons in the fire, right now.)
I hope that you'll post some more videos. The Nation has no shortage of clever building gimics and such . . . but precious few real quality performers/performances. Yours is one of the rare exceptions. Your singing and playing has a very gentle and captivating quality. Gotta tell you, I absolutely love it!
Kudos!

Welcome Shelley, Glad to have you here. Very nice uke you've built there and excellent video as well. Look forward to seeing more builds from you in the future.
yes that sounds like the perfect Bobbin Shopping trip
you could do with finding some Bobbins with a Taperd Shaft this would prevent Slipage , but you would also need to make the Tuner Holes taperd so yo would need some sort of Taperd Reamer , but would be worth the effort as they look so cool , not seen Bobbins used before ,i'm sure many on here will love the bobbins also
Wow that's some voice you got there , you're a Woman of many tallents
you got the building bug already lol!! it,s very addictive , but very rewarding when you play your own hand made instrument , no matter how many you make you always have the feeling of joy !!
Thanks for adding me to your freinds
Regards
juju.
