Glenn-- What makes an acoustic cigar box banjo sound like a banjo is the high 5th string, believe it or not. That's what gives any 5-string banjo its distinctiveness regardless of the specific tone it produces (e.g., fretless or nylon-stringed).

Also, I long ago discovered that my banjos sounded good acoustically, while my 6-string guitars didn't. So now the 6-stringers are all amplified solid-bodies. Part of the reason is that strings on a banjo don't go as low as on a guitar, and a cigar box just isn't going to reproduce those low notes very well.

Your guitars sound every bit as good as a standard commercial electric guitar, by the way.

Glenn -- Audio samples sound fantastic! If those are all played on 3-and-4-string CBGs, well, they sound like 6!

BTW, I commented back about my "Brick House" banjo and ukes, but don't know if that shows up on your page. I still don't have this social networking stuff figgered out...

Glenn, I love all your builds and designs. You have put a lot of detail into everyone which make them extra special. Great idea of the belt cutting it into in the middle. I had thought of using belts, but cutting the metal part of off and hooking those ends to the CBGs, but your idea is a 100% better.

Hey, more experienced cbg peeps! I've seen two variations on the way the neck goes thru the box. One has it flush and glued to the lid/base. The other has it mostly cut deeper so the lid/base has less contact with the neck. Supposed to allow more vibration and thus volume/tone/sustain. What do you cbg'ers think?
