hey craig,i was talking about the entire neck in reference to neck angle, not headstock angle. to see the kind of neck angle i want before attaching the neck i use a metal yard stick and lay it flat on the neck while holding the neck in place where it should be attached.then when i tilt the neck the yardstick at the end where the bridge is will show the height where the strings will be when the strings are attached to the guitar when its finished. if your neck is flush with the box and the yard stick is on the neck--with the neck straight the yardstick will be flush with the box at the bridge. if you tilt the neck down just a little at the headstock side, the yardstick end at the bridge will raise up.i usually like the height there at the bridge to be somewhere between 1/4 inch height and as much as 3/8 inch height depending on the set up of the bridge for the type of guitar--resonator or non resonator.hope this helps you understand more about neck angle.

yep craig i looked at the latest pic of the lowe cone build you have and i think the neck set up will work as far as the overlapping is concerned, don't forget about neck angle!!!!!!! you want the headstock end of the neck to tilt down a little so that the angle of the neck creates proper down pressure on the bridge of the brass cone, thus increasing the vibration on the cone for better volume projection.

howdy craig,i,m just a simple guy with a overactive imagination, man you are always worthy,i have the thought mentality that say every body is better than me at building,so i compensate that by being as creative as i can to adjust.

thanks, for the comment craig.i would say old lowe has lots more experience with the brass cones for sure,he has a lot of these box builds down to a science, and i say that from talking with him many times about it. old lowe is one of my favorite builders and i have learned many things from him. seems like your builds have lots of character, and i cant imagine how nice the lowezo will be that you build,be sure and take several pics of the brass lowe cone build,i would enjoy being able to see them. thanks again.

hey there craig, i dont think the 1/4 thick lid on the box is a problem for the brass lowecone, simply because the cone will do the vibrating and its probably better to have the thinner wood on the bottom of the box cause the brass cone will throw more vibrations inside the box, allowing for better tone overall to the box. that is just an opinion,as far as if you used the thinner wood for the top and the brass cone would throw the vibrations into the box on the thicker back they would bounce off of the back with more force and make the guitar have a more crisp and less warm tone, more brighter in other words. that is just another opinion. these opinions are just based on theory, not necessarily on facts. be glad to help out with more if you would like more ideas or opinions, take care and as a after thought you will probably not find any dissapointment with the brass lowecone if you install it in the top or back of the box. if i had to choose i would install it into the top of the box.

Craig, I finished a three string "Don Tomas" cbg yesterday. Ellen is completing a 4 string "Padron" by the weekend. Although not a fancy job I am very pleased with the look of mine. Now I have to learn to play. Ellens I think will be very nice looking with Padron box and cherry neck. When I figure out how to send pictures I will forward one to you. Best wishes. Lee and Ellen Frazier.

Hey Craig, I had a cracker time the Fest. Good to meet you. Thanks for the kind words about my playing, I appreciate it. I'm all fired up to write and play some more. I'll see you there next year and we'll both do a set.

Craig, we appreciate the time you spent with us at the CBG festival saturday. ( Lee, Ellen and Jim, "TALL", Jim is also a fly fisherman). Ellen and I went to the cigar store and stocked up on boxes today. I am going through the lumber pile tomorrow. We hope to start construction on our 1st CBG this week. Hope we can emulate the clean, high quality craftsmanship you demonstrate. I can't play but my son-in-law assures us he can make us at least a one tune wonder. Best wishes. Lee and Ellen Frazier

Welcome aboard, Craig! You will find lots of helpful folks and information here on all things CBG (CBU, CBB, etc.) Feel free to poke around, ask questions, and post your stuff (photos, recordings, videos, etc.).

Up in the Free Resources menu at the top, you will see a number of plans for building and playing cigar box guitars/ukuleles/banjos/dulcimers/violins. I encourage you to download any of the plans, take a look at them, and ask questions from there. Also our site is VERY searchable. I bet you your questions have already been asked, so take a few moments and look around.

Join our Chat sometime (see the bar at the bottom of your browser page). Keep in mind that tho the chat window says there are X number of people online, not all may have the chat window up.

Most of all, have fun!

-Wes
