How do I get that 1960-70 rock amp sound?

Hi
I'm looking for tips to sort out my live sound
and get a great rocking sound from my amp and CBG

Has anyone got any tips?

I think valves is the only way to go
but what's the best amp pedal combo for some
great rocking sounds?

Or do I just need to add an overdrive?

As I need a fatter sound.
(AC/DC, 70's rock kinda thing with some 60's
Cleaner songs too)

All help or fun is appreciated

Keep rocking
Bug

Ps using a 4 string an P bass pickup
Plus a 3 string and single double hotrail
Pup
Six string goldfoil (which works ok for sound)

Playing Cambridge hence would like help to sort
Before then if anyone fancies giving me some tips?

You can use on of mine bug. I like The 65 super and deluxe reverb, but they think there made of gold.

I'm a gear freak. I have the 'eric johnson' syndrome. Each song has it's own sound thing. Here's the dirt boxes I have.

Mesa Boogie V-twin
Fulltone '70'
Electro Harmonix 'Soul Food'
T-Rex 'Crunchy Frog'
Voo-Doo Labs "Sparkle Drive'
Ibanez 'TS9DX Tube Screamer'
Wampler 'Tweed 57'
Catalinbread 'Dirty Little Secret'
Catelinbread 'WIIO'
Elecro Harmonix 'EHXtortion'
Vox 'Big Ben Overdrive'

I also use an Electro Harmonix 'POG2' to get octave fuzz sounds,

What i've noticed with all of these pedals is pickup output and impedance effect the way they work. Even tele, Fender style single coils and PAF humbuckers all produce a slightly different distortion quality threw the same stomp box.

Honestly what your going to need to do is take some of your CBGs into a music store and try out a few stop boxes. Be the only way to find what will give you the sound you want. Tell a salesman weather your looking for a smooth or gritty sound. Probably best to stay away from anything that says 'fuzz'. This type of distortion causes the most feedback. Unpotted pickups will squall uncontrollably. Even at low volumes.

Then there's staking or playing threw two stomp boxes at the same time. This opens up a new world of possibilities. The Soul Food was made to do just that. Really not meant to be a stand alone device. The 'Tube Screamer' is good for this as well.

Hendrix and many others used a 'Fuzz Face' or 'Soul Bender' threw a fully cranked amp to get the sounds they are known for. The Beatles, Clapton and others actually use the controls on a recording mixer to create some of their distorted sounds. An amp that was a favorite of people like Neil Young was the old Fender Tweed. This thing distorted quickly. Has a really chunky distortion. The beauty of this time period in music is there was so many different sounds. Because people were using so many different amps. There was no homogenized sound.

It's good to try different amps and learn - I once had a 50 watt Plexi reissue , no tone controls, two channels, I never got it loud enough to break into a Hendrix style roar but it nearly blew the windows out of the house.... :-(

As for Tube vs, Solid state, I never got the sound I wanted out of an SS but found a large MG to use at Boissey and was really impressed with it - like Digly said... ;-)

I've bought and sold dozens of amps of all shapes and sizes, like they say quality costs, important in the studio but in a noisy pub full of punters they're not too fussy, being too loud does piss people off but it's the music that counts :-)

Bug, you say that small things make a big difference but you have 2 problems.  One is that you need to be sure that your changes are controlled so that you know exactly what caused the difference in sound.  Secondly, as Oily said, the biggest variable for acoustics is probably your venue.  What sounds good in the Bug Shoals studio at the end of the garden will probably sound very different in a performance setting.  Just hook an amp up to an overdrive and go !

Oily, if you saw Bug's garage and shed, you'd know that he's no stranger to GAS !!

I can recommend the Eminence Legend speakers - I fitted up an empty cab with them last week they sound great! ;-)

Which brings us right back to the excessive cash burning a hole in your pocket scenario...;-)
