Hi Anders.
Thanks for the complement about my guitars. If I understand you right, you converted a diatonic fretted stick dulcimer into a chromatic one, and in so doing created a harder to play instrument, Now it has unwanted kerfs. What did you do, remove the chromatic frets to make it diatonic again? Or were the "accidents". In any case, you can get wood putty, and they come in different colors to try to match the original wood. If you refill the kerfs and once dried you can sand it smooth and then try to refinish it with a few coats of something like polyurethane. You will likely still be able to see where the fret kerfs were, but at least it will feel smooth. You will want to protect the adjacent frets by masking them with blue painters tape or masking tape.
I'm afraid to really correct the problem, you are going to have to replace the fretboard. Short of that, spray painting it may be an option followed by a few coats of polyurethane, but again need to mask the frets very carefully before hand. That would hide the repaired kerfs pretty well. Other builders may have better remedies.
Hope that helps.
-Rand.
