Fretting tips and scale length height compensation etc - PLEASE HELP!!!

Dear team

After many failed attemps at fretting I am planning to try again and after some help.

1) What is the best fret wire to use?

2) What's the best scale length to use?

3) What is any string height compensation required against scale length?

4) Could I be using incorrect strings and will that make a huge difference?

What is the trick to making these work and play well?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Mr Bug

(This is clever on an old banjo I have for just an interesting photo, note brass tube to typical 6 string tuners one not used, I kept my kids tooth to make a banjo nut from shhhh dont tell the tooth fairy)

Thanks Diglydog yes haven't been using string compensation
So it could be the issue
Will give it a go.
Yes snow Cauldron is excellent value and quick.

The Stuff you can get from china is on a roll and ben
So not great..

Had some stew mac scales but i don't
Think they allow for string angles.

I know your cbg's work well so will try your scales

I fancy trying a 20inch scale as I have a guitar with
It that sounds great..

Travel sizes CBG would be handy.

Use whatever scale length you want, within reason.

I use this fret distance calculator (many others are available) and I tick the 'stretch compensation' box to allow for string stretch.

I buy my fret wire from ToneTech Luthier Supplies.  I forget which type it is - I just tell him that it's for CBGs.  They aren't the cheapest but the tang width matches my saw, so the job is easy.  Snowcauldron also offers an excellent service but the wire I got from him had a slightly wider tang.  It's just a case of buying what suits you.
