Fretting tips and scale length height compensation etc - PLEASE HELP!!!

Dear team

After many failed attemps at fretting I am planning to try again and after some help.

1) What is the best fret wire to use?

2) What's the best scale length to use?

3) What is any string height compensation required against scale length?

4) Could I be using incorrect strings and will that make a huge difference?

What is the trick to making these work and play well?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Mr Bug

(This is clever on an old banjo I have for just an interesting photo, note brass tube to typical 6 string tuners one not used, I kept my kids tooth to make a banjo nut from shhhh dont tell the tooth fairy)

String stretch is a few things, I think.  By pressing the string down, you increase the distance from the nut and bridge to the fret ......very slightly.  In doing this, you stretch the string, increasing the tension.  Somebody sold their soul to Lucifer and he gave them a conversion factor.

Bemuzic's technique of actually measuring the note on a tuner is probably the most reliable.

BridgeToFret[1] = ScaleLength – NutToFret[1]

NutToFret[2] = (BridgeToFret[1] / 17.817) + NutToFret[1]

Repeat this process for each fret position on your fingerboard. If you consider that the nut is the same as a 0th fret, a generalized formulae for the calculation of the position of any fret n, given the scale length and the distance from the nut to the previous fret is:

BridgeToFret[n-1] = ScaleLength – NutToFret[n-1]

NutToFret[n] = (BridgeToFret[n-1] / 17.817) + NutToFret[n-1]

My acoustic is fairly similar, it measures about 17.2 at the 20th fret and about the same at the 12th - 12.6 ish

25.2 bridge to nut approx

Is this not just rule of 18th's?

what's the maths on string angle compensation?

Diglydog I had a quick look and it seems like for one CBG it was nearly £13 for some frets from them..

I have got some stuff from snow cauldron to try again...thanks for your help..

I will do some scale comparisons later against CBG's that work...to see how they measure, I know Shane ripped a guitar a part to get his template that would work.. (think its a fender scale he now uses)

Bemuzic measured hers out using a guitar tuner...

Just have to find something that I am happy with works...will try your scale next

Wire off a roll is fine.  That's what I get from ToneTech and I actually prefer it because the ends sit into the fingerboard nicely.
