I found some nicely curly maple also at my local lumber yard and bought a piece of it about 4' x 12" x 2" thick.

I stored it for about five years before using it for necks.

Necks. Definitely necks. Use an alternating wood for veneer fingerboards.

I've found the only thing to do with a really nice piece like this is to leave it on the shelf.  I found a few of these at Lowe's and haven't decided to slice and dice them yet.  It's been almost 2 years now.  I think they will eventually look great with some black boxes.
