My first encounter with anything resembling a Cigar Box Guitar was when my brother in law asked me if I could make a presentation box for a bottle of Jack Daniels.

I built a quick sample box out of a few scraps so we could agree on size, shape etc. It was to be a toe pincher coffin design.

To cut a very long story a little shorter, a change of plan came about. The presentation box was to become a body for a home made guitar. Building parts for guitars was totally new to me so I used the poor man's research system (google) and very quickly found the Cigar Box Nation, CB Gitty, Glenn Watt and a heap of other players and builders.

In the end I constructed 2 boxes using 2 different joining techniques out of pine with plywood top and bottoms.

One of the boxes was too tall so I cut it down lengthways and the boxes were shipped off to the guitar builder.I was left with a coffin shaped off cut that was about 1 1/2 high.

Inspired by what I had seen during my research, rather than waste the off cut, I built my very first home made 3 string guitar.

And that's the story behind my introduction to a 3 string CBG.

Can I play it? NO!   Not yet! But that is another story......
