Step 3 - Mark headstock where you will drill out the holes for the slot

Mark where you plan to cut the slot fo your slotted headstock. It should be at least 1cm wide and maybe 10cm long and centered along the mid-line of the head/neck assembly. While you do this verify that the tuner will fit as expected.

Comment by Rand Moore on October 13, 2012 at 6:17am: In this photo you can see I was concerned that cutting off a 1/4" chunk from the face of the headstock would weaken the headstock too much. That was 2 years ago. In most the instruments I've built since, I have not bothered with reinforcing the backside of the headstock, and it seems it;s strong enough that I don't have to. And this is especially true of the hardwood core necks I build these days.
