Eventually I found a way to cut necks off of winebottles, the tool used to serve as a taper tool for arrow shafts, before that I used it to make bow strings....

Jan, Very inventive. That is the kind of ingenuity I greatly admire. It is simple, elegant and much safer than freehand. Thank you for sharing an excellent idea and a very straight forward design. I hope you will also post it to the "Special Tools" blog.

Also I found out that wrapping with cellotape prevents the edges from chipping to much. There are still little pieces coming off but usually the cuts are quite nice and don't need much smoothing afterwards.

Perfect! I'm gonna build one today. Got a bunch of bottles waiting to be cut, but my old way didn't work very good. I was getting 1 out of 3 at best that didn't shatter. thanks for the info!!!!!!
