That was a good thought, but I've now fitted a string tree to the D, and it's still dead. Think I'm gonna switch it for a 0.024w or similar; it may just be that plain strings just don't get fatter with dignity. It might even be the slide I'm using- I usually go for ceramic- but I think it's a plain gauge thing...

Pretty.  Neat sound hole.  Yup on the dead or buzzing strings.  Often a problem.  Often a mystery, challenge and pain in the butt.  I just finished a DGB three yesterday and today.  It had buzzy noises especially in the B string.  String retainers (hold downs) helped and may be what you need here.  And I first used a coarse threaded screw for the saddle and that allowed too much movement for the little B string.  I then used a finer thread and that took it too pretty good, but not perfect.
