You may remember that back on New Year’s day I asked for suggestions for a port and cheese box that Santa had provided. After mulling over the replies, I decided on a 3-string slider. It’s taken a while as the weather has not been good here. As we were in total lockdown it wasn’t easy getting supplies, so I used what I had to hand.
The neck is pine with a ¼” piece of mahogany laminated on the back for strength. The fretboard is an offcut of walnut, planed and sanded. I thought that a slider would be a tad more tolerant of an uneven fretboard! Besides, I have had my fill of cutting and dressing frets. A rummage in the spares box produced a twin rail humbucker and a selection of strings, tuned EBe. VSL is around 21½ inches. As I didn’t have a hinge to retain the strings I used pop rivet heads in a through neck design. My last 3 closed tuners sit in a scarfed head, which went very well; only my second scarfed neck. I love where the band of mahogany shows.
To fill the open front I used 1/8” spruce sheet which makes a great soundboard. I also thought it would be fun to have f holes. Yeah, right!
