Luv 'em all, "Poor Man's Tenors" for "Poor Man's Blues" :-)
Yes, 2 finger chords have gotten me through most of my playing time. Amazing how many songs you can get through (and how many people you can impress) with a few minimalist chords and a good chop rhythm. Ha!
You are welcome, Alan. An EASY way to play mandolin is SAWMILL Tuning. I think if you search that out, you can find my video on it. It may or may not be of use to you. ALSO: mandolin 2 finger chords make playing G, C, and D chords easy in standard tuning. If you don't know or can not find those, let me know and I will try to help you.
Chris, I think 3 strings and one strings are the most CLASSIC CBG numbers. But I also like 4s a lot and 2s a little. Why just today, I took a perfectly good 2 string and turned it into crap. Photo posted.
I hadn't really thought about doing 4 strings mostly because I like the relative ease (& economy) of 3 stringers, but I also hadn't considered the "modified guitar" or mandolin tuning aspects. Mandolin tuning would definitely help me learn my mandolin chording better. Hmm...maybe a 4 string is in my near future...
Anyway, thanks a bunch Chris & Uncle John! It's much appreciated!
Alan, the guitar owner pretty much chooses the strings and tuning. Some (or many) would say standard tenor guitar tuning is CGDA, which ends up chording and noting much like a mandolin. The same string relationships as a mandolin. So, a mandolin player could pick up a tenor tuned that way and instantly play it. I think it would give a C chord with the same finger fretting as the mandolin would give a G chord.
DGBE which I use is like the exact same as the 4 small strings on a standard 6 string. So a guitar player could play the tenor right away - the 'missing' two big strings might cause temporary confusion. -- For me, it is much easier to play than a six string. DGBE is also called "Chicago Tuning'.
GDGB is an open G with a Bassy sound and closely related to CBG tuning.
There would be other tunings as well. I hope that helps.
Quick question: when you say one should have been DGBE & the other should have been GDGB, how do you know? What dictates tuning? I've only made two 3 stringers so far, so this has me befuddled. Thanks!
Thanks, Ron, Pick, Chris and Andries.
Yes, Andries. I think tenors are the closest factory builds to CBGs. That and the fact that I can play them pretty well is why I love them. I am still a self graded 6 on a six string and maybe a 7.5 on a 4 string. Well, I also like then because they are out of the ordinary.
The right most is the latest one done. It is pretty good and tuned GDGB. I can see now that I should have made it DGBE and used the one with the painted on (white) pick guard should have been the GDGB. Maybe later.
Chris, we do need to get together again.
Pick. The pot lid is certainly in my top two.
Thanks, guys!
Wauw , your production is on High Speed, UJ your turning them out like hot cake's, looking real good there UJ, if it was not for your Custom String Holder , the all look the Bissenis! Tenor's are the nex't best thing next to CBG , fine Groep John! Fine Groep!
