One neck just routed and one shaped and part-finished

This shows the difference between a neck that has just been shaped on the router and what I end up with. The oak neck on the left (this one is for Anders) has not yet had the hand work done. The other (in parana pine) has been shaped and sanded.

Hi Hippy Chip, Wes, Toad, Phillip Dan and Andy.

I'm really flattered to get these comments.

Toad. Pretty much all the wood I use is old stuff that people don't want. Funny though, that you say "off the shelf" because this is from one of three shelves that I was given, so it is the shelf. They are at least fifteen years old. My understanding is that parana pine can warp a bit so I wouldn't be confident using new wood even if it was properly dried. The fretboard is mahogany from the side of a draw.

Many thanks again.

John

I like how your glue line wraps around to a point on the back side. Very professional.  You could put a layer (or several) of contrasting veneer in here and really show it off.

Hi there Jim.

Thank you for the comment. It's a 2" router bit (with 1/2" spindle). The way I look at it, it took about as long to make as shaping a couple of necks. Once you do the third neck you are in profit.

All the best.

John
