I place a short board over the fret and then hammer the board to seat the fret.

Ok, will just hammer it in then. I will use a piece of wood to protect the frets, thanks for tips.

Keen to see the finished instrument. Same as David, I position fret wire and tap in with luthier fretting hammer.

Looking good.

Simply tap the fret wire in place with a hammer, preferably a dead blow hammer, or use an offcut of wood to protect the frets.
