Resonator bass using 18 inch scale with plastic strings. Wanted something with a bit more tone on the low E without using an amp.

Cool! Well it seems to me experimenting, that creative side of the brain is what brings me to build over and over again. The possibilies are truly endless! I'm very much into super small, mobile, no extra baggage payments on the flights!! Great Mike, well, keep it up and enjoy. I've enjoyed our chat and seeing what you've done here a lot :) -Glenn

My pleasure - still experimenting with different combinations of body and resonator but the strings stay the same. Have started to incorporate an under bridge transducer but mostly use it for tuning. Because of the physics of the strings the bass can sound like a double bass through an amp - and a lot more portable.......

The strings are commercially made by D'addorio under license from Aquila. In the UK I reckon the D'addorio are more consistent and cheaper (eBay).
They are intended for uke basses with a scale of 18 to 20 inches, any longer and the G string will stretch and not hold tuning. The E A are slightly different compound to the D G and have different tensions.

The stats are
E - 0.197 tension 9.73 pounds
A - 0.165 " 12.23 "
D - 0.118 " 11.12. "
G - 0.094 " 12.68 "
Quite low tension for a bass!

Happy to give advice about construction if you're interested.

Like this! What are you using for strings, material and gauges if you would please? -Glenn
