This 100 foot Sears & Roebuck measuring tape reel was my dad's. I used it today and it cranked (reeled in) way too stiff.
I want to preserve it in good working order to pass it on to one of my sons.

How can I make it crank more easily and make it last>?

And to think, all that advise didn't cost a thing Uncle John.......

Woody, I tried that twice and it seemed to help a little.  Will still try Ron's advice.

Thanks, Ron.  I think that is dandy advice and I will likely do just that.   Then keep it in a plastic bag in my shop so the dust does not get it.

Oh, you can also spritz some lube down inside through the hole...

It probably needs all the sawdust and years of crap cleaned out of it, and needs the winding mechanism oiled. Easiest, but slowest, way, is to methodically unroll the entire tape, clean off any munge, then very carefully cover the entire metal tape with a good lubricant like 3-In-1 oil. I remember my grandfather doing this periodically; he had several of these, and they all still work smoothly, some 60-70 years later.

Arse-homes?   I meant Arse-holes!

Gees, this place sucks.  What Arse-homes.   Getting International CRAP from Canada and Australia.....   Ask a simple question and see what I get?

What was way to stiff ? the bloke doing the winding, or the tape, I recommend Glucosamine Tablets for the winder, and a good old fish oil based spray like WD40 etc. for the tape
