If the heel joint (neck into body) seems good, it should take any tuning you want.   That tail piece has a lot of strength.   Open D should be good.    There is an open C, but I have not tried it,  Sure like that git!

Got it strung up UJ using xtra light strings tuned to open D,is that the lowest tension tuning I can use?

I like that a whole lot.  Hope she comes out a player.  Show us in the end.  

I DO NOT need any more guitars.  But if I saw this one some where and not horribly overpriced, I would have to buy it.  I've done similar, where the belly is up and I added a tail piece.  Worked good.   I love tenors - 4 strings.  This would also make a dandy tenor.
