I tried different iron blanks; the ones that sound best seem to be tin plated cans (which formerly contained sheep cheese from Denmark to be exact :-)

Ferritic chrome steel sounded pretty good, a bit sharp, more like a common single coil, but with less timbre

I simply used hot glue to hold it to a piece of balsa and taped to a spindle I made for a cordless drill. With the magnets in the center and a bead of hot glue on the other end kept the wire where I wanted. After potting the wire pretty much stays there so you can peel away the hot glue

I thought the bobbin might be ferrous metal as a magnet I had stuck to one of Elmar's pups that I have. I was thinking about using a piece of cookie tin folded *almost* flat so it can fit on my winder, then cutting a slit in a couple of pieces of cardboard to temporarily slot over the bobbin to guide the wire as I wind it. Then when it's wound, finish flattening the tin...

glad the thread turns into building ;-) Regarding the bobbin: I tension a thin cable, put the blanks beneath and superglue them. This means 2 upper, 2 lower, which takes some time but the bobbin is pretty much at the end of the blank. Looking out for a quicker method, any suggestion?

Piece of sheet metal. Elmar's website has all the info. Honestly I only saw the pictures posted on this site and kinda figured out how to do it on my own. I did visit his site also. I'm assuming that's a serious question?

what did you use for a bobbin - the thing you stuck the magnets on and wrapped the wire around?

I did notice elmar and Craig I did make it my own! I used rectangular magnets instead of round! And clear plastic sheet glued on top instead of tape! Sorry for not initially giving credit that's unlike me I forgot this one time and look what happens! Oh well I guess hopefully no harm done I never sell anything I build! I've had many offers but never accept them I do however give some away to deserving people!

Elmar is an inspiration! I had considered attempting a version of his famous pickup - and I still might.

Innovation will always spawn imitators. Hopefully Elmar has patented his unique design to protect it, too! I think it's cool that he's shared his design process so others can benefit. And as long as they're not trying to pass it off in name or for $ as a 'Flatpup' it's all good.

Reverse engineering is one way to learn. Maybe this will lead you to your own variation or new creation, Patrick.

thanks Grampa Poots - if you would have read my comment, you certainly would have noticed I'm happy to share. Or did you miss that?

I most certainly agree and I do that but this one time it must have slipped my mind? I do believe I've already apologized about it?
