Yeh, I thought I might've been a little optimistic that that skinny stick wouldn't bow, but it started to a little. I reduced the tension on it until I can get some thin strips of something to stiffen it. I already have some canjos and a couple of diddley bows in the higher registers and one bass diddley my wife helped me decorate. She called it "Killer". This is a baritone, my only, so I'll work to get this one in shape for that. Should be an easy fix and it might even look good. (I hope I hope)

Sorry to hear about the too much "oomph".  You've given yourself some options Ray.  I guess you could try de-tuning it a bit to take the tension off, unless you prefer the key it is tuned to.  I'll be interested to see the outcome.

Well Ambrose, it added some "oomph" to it alright, but proved to be a little too much, as I suspected might be the case. Gonna have to laminate down either side of the neck with some thin mahogany or maple or... Guess I'll do a little cosmetic modding on it while shoring up that skinny little neck. I couldn't just put a smaller string on it... Could I? (Winking)

Thank you Pick. You were wrong once?! (Fist thrust into the hips, pointing  with the other hand) Well, I have NEVER been wrong! (snicker, chortle, guffaw, hysterical laughter...)

If i had to put money on it . I'd  say its a red oak.

But as I like to say ... " i was wrong once  .. when i thought i was mistaken .. so i was actually  right " ;-)

OK, Pick! Thank you very much for that! This stuff seems as hard as some of the hard maple that I have worked with. I'm no woodworker. I know my way around many metals, forming and cutting, but I've just been building these things about three years. Was doing almost all of it without power tools, (tired of the noise), but time has got me looking into a few power tools, such as a bandsaw and sander. Recently bought a Rockwell Bladerunner, but it just doesn't quite rip cut the 3/4 inch hardwoods.

Thanks again!

EDIT  "a" special walnut . some walnut is much much harder than  regular walnut . some even many times harder than oak.

Looks like a red oak to me . (in big picture blown up) . could be special walnut .

Yeh Ambrose, I hope I am not overdoing it on the neck. So far, so good and it's a very hard, stiff wood. Looks a lot like walnut, but a lot harder than the walnut I have worked with. Got any ideas, anybody? Uncle, I appreciate the compliment.  Ya know what this wood is?

 Thanks guys,

Ray
