The plug cutter is 1/4-inch (as is the forstner bit). Once I get a drill press, these things will be MUCH cleaner. I just take a scrap of whatever I want to use for dots and cut a bunch of plugs in the face of the board -usually @ 1/8-inch or 1/4-inch deep- then slice them off on the table saw where they go flying all over the place. I stoop over, pick them up off the floor, out of my shirt pockets, ears, or anywhere else they may have landed, and ..voila, a handful of dots. I'm thinking of getting a smaller, maybe 1/8-inch plug cuter & forstner bit for the smaller dots between the higher frets. As it is now, a 1/4-inch dot is kinda crowded when you get up past the 15th fret, especially with a shorter fret scale.

does the dowel bit work well for smaller dowels?  I have seen these bits but hesitate to buy mainly because I am not sure exactly how to use it and if it would do well for smaller dots.
