Seeing as how all my CBG builds have been fretless, the only fretted builds have been single string canjos, I tend to play (if you can call my noodling playing) slide only and just let the notes come where they may. I know a guy who had a stroke and couldn't finger the frets well. He learned to play slide and does really well. Guess as we get older we just make do with what we have. Hang in there, this too will pass.

Thomas, I like to do some finger stuff with slide and that does not seem to work well right now.  Heck, even hitting the space bar while typing gets my thumb's attention.  But you gave a good idea.  Turns out I can play slide diddley.   :)
