Shhh.... don't tell anybody but it is hiding a less than ideal neck joint on the sides. Nothing terrible just this spruces things up nicely as you mention!

Beautiful! I have used a very simple version of this kind to cover up minor flaws in the transition between neck and body. I guess that you, with the skill you show here, don't have to hide anything.
