First CBG

These are pictures of the first CBG I am building. This will be a 3 string resonator utilizing a tea box, a bed slat and a paint can lid. I have decided to make this rudimentary guitar to get me started, and then I will work on the other brief case reso when I have a better understanding of my new tools and techniques. I have acquired a jointer and a small router.

I had to add some veneer to the back of the headstock to bring down the tuner height a bit. But I still had to put a string tree on for the middle string wich is on the furthest tuner. I skipped the paint can lid and went with a brass cone from Josh at smokehouse guitars. I actually inserted the cone upside down thinking it would give more of a National sound rather than Dobro. I have also isntalled a pizeo pickup on the inside attached to the cone itself. I am in the process of trying different strings and tunings, but it is very playable. Its not as loud as I would like but it does have a real nice reso tone to it.

My simple project is getting more involved. i have decided to go ahead and add frets. I have ordered a fret saw, a bone nut, bone saddle, fretwire, and radisued sanding blocks. I now believe I can make this a real nice cbg from the get go.

I have decided to change my neck design since my last post. I have added a fretboard for two reasons. 1: To help lower the action since the biscuit bridge will rest on top of the paint can lid which is flush with the box top. 2: Keep the tuner pegs lower than the fretboard. I am not sure what type woods I am using here. I think the neck is pine and the fretboard is oak.

The notches I cut into the box top and the board I tried to cut shy so that they would fit together snugly. I then used a file to make them fit. This is where I am at the moment. I will post more as I go along. I hope this helps someone else. And please feel free to criticize my work I need all the help I can get. I am still trying to figure out how I am goint to add the tuners, biscuit bridge, and tail piece. This is going to be a 3 stringer just for slide. I will probably mark where the frets should be, but I am not adding frets. and I want the action a little high.

Next ran both sides of the bed slat on a jointer. I am not really worried if they are exactly even on each end, just flat. The width of the board was then measured as well as the width of the box. By subtracting half of the board width from half of the box width I was able to make two marks on the inside of each end of the box and I added 1/8th an inch. I cut a notch out of each end of the box all the way up to the top. I layed the board across the strings of another guitar so I could mark where the bridge and the nut should be placed. Then I cut the ends off the board leaving enough space for headstock and a tailstock. Next I measured the inside of the box top length and the thickness of the box lid. The place where I marked the board where the bridge would be was lined up with the center of the hole I cut into the box top. Then I cut notches into the sides of the board to fit into the box lid nothces I cut.

I am trying to create a step by step page for any other enthusiast that is as green as I am. And hopefully some of the Pros could give me pointers.

I began this project by placing a paint can lid on top of the tea box and tracing around it. I drilled a hole with a hole saw into the middle then used a jigsaw to cut out the entire circle. for the next step I used a cordless drill in which I have added a chuck to. I added a drum sanding bit into the grinder and sanded around the inside of the hole making sure that the paint can lid was not ubstructed in any way from turning on the inside of the hole.
