I cut the fret markers then stain the neck. The cuts come out darker.

No heat. I just make a couple passes with a miter saw to cut some grooves. Then I apply the stain with a rag, kind of heavy. Then I wipe off the excess. Since the grooves are lower and kind of rough inside they soak up more stain and it doesn't get wiped off.

Nice old timey looking finish.  How did you do those fret markers?   Heat and touch?
