Hi Uncle John;  I used a straight edge, a square and black sharpie.  the ink is permanent and it works fine for me on the lap steels.

I agree, it’s a good wood, most of my strats are Ash. We have lots of ash trees here also, mine always seem to get taken over by termites tho,cheers

I like ash.  I have a thick hall tree I made from it.  How did you make the nice and precise fret and border markings?

It is Ash, we have a lot of it here.  Local tree services call it "pain in the ash" probably cause it's so hard.  I disagree with them, it is a nice solid hardwood and I love the grain structure.  A lot of picture frame mouldings are made from ash.
