Hi Chick Who Tinkers. I have no problems with tuning after rusting. I only rusted the tuning plate and not the gears, etc. Here is how I "artificially aged" the tuners: Before starting, you have to clean the pieces to be rusted very well, then use a detergent to remove any fingerprints because they will prevent rusting. (I shined my tuning plates like mirrors). Then spray with a mixture of: salt (2 tablespoons), vinegar (2 fluid ounces) and Hydrogen Peroxide (8 fluid ounces). Let dry, then repeat. It helps if you leave in the sun to dry. You will be amazed how quickly this happens. As soon as you spray the parts, the liquid starts to bubble and rust appears immediately. Continue as you like for your desired effect. Maybe try different combinations of the mixture. Let me know how this works for you.

Uncle John, I 'artificially aged' the tuners by first shining them like chrome, then cleaning them with detergent to remove any oils or fingerprints. I sprayed them with vinegar and let that dry. Then I sprayed a mixture of vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and salt on them. The rust began to appear immediately. I continued to spray the mixture a couple more times during the day and left them in the sun to dry.
