hi, thanks for your kind comment on my video : -)...keep on playing!!
  • Doug Thorsvik

Thanks for the interest. Yes, all the brown designs on my guitars are woodburning. I just use simple repeating patterns, X's, dots, crosshatching, lines that woodburning books illustrate for a sampler burn to build skills. They add interest and deflect attention from my marginal finishing skills plus it's fun and pretty easy. Again, love the flamin CBG stand, keep pushing the edge of the envelope!
  • Penny Nelson

hey love that stand! What a great idea..
  • Penny Nelson

that was the before sound... this is the after the fix..

Not tooo much differences but infinitely more pleasant to play and not as dangerous...lol

dg -- Glad you like my first-ever video! As for my tuners-on-the-bottom banjos: I started making them that so they'd balance nicely on the lap (or strap). I'd read about a cookie tin banjo that had the problem of neck-heaviness. As it turns out, a rectangular cigar box (unlike a round cookie tin body) minimizes having to prop up the neck with the left hand anyway; but I found the "tailstock" banjos somewhat easier to make. The banjos I make with a normal headstock (like in the video) have very light violin-style friction pegs.

I'm gonna check out your video now -- with dial-up, it'll take a while to download (*sigh*)...

Thank you dg for your comment. It took me some time to understand basic theory too and even more time to see how directly applicable it is to improving your playing. Take your time and absorb a lttle at a time. Eventually it will click. Enjoy.

  • Wes "I'm Baaaaack" Yates

Heh, if its in print here, it shouldn't be a 'trade secret'. We're a great bunch for sharing. Juju told me he got it from RailroadDon.

I do check out the pics as often as I can. I have had sooooo many great ideas and tips from just looking.

    Cheers

dg -- Sorry it took this long to respond -- I just saw your question on my page! Anyway,
my banjo is tuned to an open C chord, i.e., GCGCE (from the top, the high 5th string). I think it's a pretty tuning which makes it easy to pick out melodies. Clawhammer-style players sometimes prefer GCGCD. "Standard” banjo tuning is GDGBD. Have fun with your banjo! -- Bear

Thanks for the comment,What fun huh?By the way I just saw that guitar stand,Man that is cool.
  • Yellowbelly Flatt

    Hi dg,
in answer to your query on the stand up bass, well, as you might expect - acoustically the instrument is quiet - but it was built to be amplified. To this end it sounds good. After 3 days the strings have about settled and a deep bass sound is obtained from the single disc piezo pick up.
  • Tracy Tomlinson

Thanks dg....I'm happier than a pig in a mud pit with my build. It does have mistakes and my action is a little high but it is still tweakable so I can clean it up some yet. But it is very playable and sounds nice....what more could I ask for?
  • Tracy Tomlinson

Thanks for your friendship link, the encouraging words and comments. That is part of the attraction to this site and these instruments...the people, these fabulous sounding creations and the great music that was the root of all of it!
  • Dianne Woods

DG, my box looks thicker than yours, it is 1 3/4" thick. The jack is shorter than that. I guess, I am dumn, I don't understand what you are talking bout don't drill all the way through. Help!!!! By the way, your blood is very red; I bet that hurt like ----.
  • Warren

That's brilliant! Thanks for the advise!
  • Ian Carpenter

Thanks for the feedback on the woodburning. It does take a little time, but the work is not hard. I think I'm going to have upgrade from my $15 special iron to something with more power!!! Have fun.
