Hi Matthew, yes I think I did make the wheel for the fiddle-gurdy a bit smaller to fit in the box. Don't think the size is critical, only for the turning speed. Used a round sawblade that you can put on a drill to cut the wheel. The principle of the FG is not so difficult, the tricky part once it's finished is to get the pieces of cotton on the strings right and the right amount of rosin on the wheel. Good luck with building, let me know if I can help... I usualy start building without plans, so I have to work from memory, but in this case the instructions of Havlena are pretty clear.
Thank you very much for your encouraging and constructive comments. I enjoy researching material as a means of learning. Having the ability to arrange and present the information accurately as an instructional video helps to clarify my understanding even deeper. It is definitely a pleasure to share this information with friends who share the same interest. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the presentation. Thanks again for your feedback. Enjoy.
I don't get by the nation often but this morning I saw on the front that you're heading out for a while. Be safe and make sure to take a couple cigar box guitars. We really will have to try to get together and play sometime when you get back. Let me know if you need anything while you are abroad, I'll see if I can help. Take care...
Thank you Matt. Being a veteran myself, I feel a great appreciation for those who enlist and serve their country. Especially in these troubled times. I served in the USAF at a time of peace, in a non combative environment, and worked in a depot down in Texas repairing weather equipment. (Where I began my romance with the Blues) I am glad you were inspired by my presentation. I wish the best for you and your safe and speedy return to your home and family. God bless the Universe. Let your Light Shine On Brother Matt. Keep your Faith, Keni Lee
Thank you again Matt for your kind comment. Hearing positive comments from viewers like yourself makes me want to dig in deeper, and find other creative ways to share this style of music with others. Enjoy.
Just tell me when to mail you CBG and I'll will be in the post... Don't want it to get there too early. I can set it up how you like.... low and fast, higher for slide.... either way, I salute you... keep your head down when you can and come home save.
Your serving your country is all the thanks I need. I will do my best to get it out the door by Tuesday, Wednesday at the lastest.... All the APO shipments get an extra layer of packing....
Matt, if any of your colleagues in Afghanistan want a CBG, just let me know. I/We can rustle up as many as you need. Quantities are essentially unlimited, I'd bet, with all the builders here.
Do your buddies want frets, no frets or diatonic/dulcimer frets? They are new players, they might enjoy the strummer/diatonic thing at first. Then they can graduate to a all-frets, and pass those first ones along. Remember, this is an bottomless supply of instruments. I've got some 3-string 19" necks cut and two Padron boxes - would those suit? They have no fingerboards yet, so we can do whatever fretting you/they want.
The ezfolk dulcijo one is 25" which is crazy long for a cigar box or tin. Also more prone to warping over the long haul. I'd suggest something shorter, maybe 21" or 19". And I dont' have a geared "5th" string tuner, can I run all three strings up to the head? I know you want chromatic frets.
I have a Don Pepin Garcia box which I know sounds really nice -- especially in close quarters ;-) --, but can rustle up a tin if you'd prefer.
And what tuning do you want? Dulcijoman tunes aAD. I can tune your friends' DAD, so you can play together.
Glued up 2 necks yesterday, sanded and drilled the pegholes tonight, and oiled them. One is maple with cherry fingerboard, the other is maple with bubinga. Getting some more maple so I can cut the next two necks on Friday, and glue and sand over the weekend. Black walnut and cherry for the next two. You are switched to a Las Cabrillas box (with the sailing ship) and the Don Pepin for the 3rd strummer.
Fret them up and fit them to the boxes next week! I'll try to take some pics for you and your friends. Is it best to ship them in one big box or two smaller ones?
No problem. I'm glad to do my little bit to support the troops. My little church currently have two deployed. I see their families every week. Yes, do let me know when the "Blues Hound" gets there. It is one of my fav. players. Glad to send it to you....
matt - a 3 stringer it is - won't get done til after Christmas - will send a matching amp with it - if there is enuf room in the box i may send another amp for you all if you'd like
Thank you Matthew for your comment. My CD, Good & Evil is available on www.ebay.com by searching: keni lee
If you would like to order direct by using an invoice to your paypal account or through mail order just let me know. Thanks again for your interest and kind words. Enjoy.
Matt, I am really happy you are enjoying your banjo. I never did yet get the hang of that frailing thing -- and annoyingly (but not really) my teenage daughter picked it up in about a weekend of goofing around on her banjo-uke. So I'll have to give it another go!
I am thinking of building a 4-string banjo with re-entrant tuning. What tuning would be good for a novice player who wants to jam in A, D and G?
Matt, thanks so much for the kind words about the CBN community. It has been an honor and a privilege to send some of my instruments to service members who are making a huge sacrifice for their countries. Hopefully you will make it to the August York Fest, and I can buy you a beer. Keep your head down and we all look forward to your safe return.
Matt: Welcome home! Thanks for your comments, but more important for your service to our country. I created and shipped a guitar to LT Sullivan. If you're interested, take a look at it on my blog http://totalrojoguitars.blogspot.com/ . Stay well, astay in touch. Jess
Matt Glad you are home! Give me a call 8145726279 when you get to Erie.I play every Thurs,(almost) at the American Legion post11 on Peach. with the Glenwood Hillbilly's.Paul Rogers who knows you is there and the Bowers brothers.Very informal and fun.Your diddleybo has been great. Maybe you can talk Williard into painting me a board and I'll add the rest. Talk to you soon. Louis
Matt, hope you are home with family now. Just wanted to thank you for turning me on to CBN. I made a post and Sam has offered to make a CBG and send it to me. This is really a great community and a wonderful distraction from the work out here at Bastion. Thanks again and wish me luck as I try my hand at a little cigar box music.
Glad to hear you are home! The podcast has once again been on the back shelf for a bit, but I have 2 episodes I want to put together and upload soon. I will also be starting a video blog on youtube this summer, I will post links once I get it going.
Thank you Matthew for your comment. I am looking forward to meeting you too and our other friends from the Nation. Virtual reality meets the real world. LOL See ya soon. Enjoy.
NICE cd! I love the vintage feel of it. There are definitely some stories being told on this, relating to our conversation at the cbg fest. Definitely made some INTERESTING listening as I took on Irene making my way on Interstate 83, oh YEAH! Thanks again, and keep up the good work!
hey matt...listened to your songs today...cool lowfi vibe...i dig it. i especially like the percussive noise on sittin on top of the world...it seems random yet cohesive. cool stuff.
I wasn't just commenting on it as a Christmas song (some Christmas songs really wouldn't stand up at any other time of year). To me it is really good performance in any context. I can listen to to it at any time of year.
Sorry bout the time lag, I wasn't scrolling down far enough and did not see your post. These are larger than my regular portable bongos, 8 10, 12, 14", and with mallets they sound like timbales. I usually use 1/2' no void ply with 1/8" plywood tops. I use small hinges to achieve a collapse the base. Will try and add a short video clip soon.
Thanks, got it..... I might have gotten it, but with the move and all, if I had it, it is buried deep in some file or the other.
I enjoyed building for you and other service personnel, but it is rare to have such good communication as I've enjoyed with you. Hope you are well and finding life full.
I was really excited to see you'd posted a vid, and even happier to see the lil banjo in action! I have a Banjo-vie (19") and I love that re-entrant thing! Your wife has a heartwrenching voice!
You are most welcome, and I hope you enjoy it. That story about those heroes that day is a story that bears repeating for generations to come. I look forward to seeing you video of the guitar in action....Dan
Matt, Being one of the Nation's "Old Timers", I enjoy watching people develop over time. It is much more enjoyable when there has been a "give and take" between the two. I like where you are right now and enjoy the gifts that you are giving to the world...
Matt, Good to hear from you. Yes, I'm building again. Hope to do 2-3 festivals this year and several gigs... Trying to nurture a CBG community in Springfield, pointing toward a Springfield, MO Festival next year. I would love to have any information you have on that film. It is a rare thing to see one of your builds in action, Anyway, I enjoy what I do, helping others, especially when there is a sense that it's appreciated. If you plan on any visits to festivals in the Midwest let me know.

Way easier to learn chords on a diatonic if you do it his way. or use the handy chord chart here: http://www.cigarboxnation.com/group/dulciworld/forum/topics/a-simpl...
