BYRON BLUESFEST 2013

I thought it'd be a great idea to put the latest albums up from the artists playing at Bluesfest - so those of you lucky enough to go can check out what you want to see. And for those of you overseas who, I'm sure, will be extremely jealous. So…Continue

More than Full Circle and Other Voices, The Golden Scarab is the best embodiment of the Doors by one of the three surviving members, and it is amazing it wasn't a huge underground smash. With mentions of moonlight drives, tightrope rides, and titles of past Doors tunes in "The Solar Boat," drummer Tony Williams, guitarist Larry Carlton, bassist Jerry Scheff, and producer Bruce Botnick generate an eerie sound behind the singer, creating a title track as mysterious and fun as anything by Morrison and company. With intense rhythms and tons of creativity, Ray Manzarek brings us on a musical journey as unique as The Phantom's Divine Comedy, and if Robbie Krieger brought the commercial element to the Doors' gravy train, it is clear here that the eldest of the quartet had more a hand in the development of the Doors persona than he may have been given credit for. One can't fault Krieger and John Densmore for stretching out with Butts Band, but there is a certain responsibility hit artists should have to their audience. The Bright Midnight releases finally address those concerns, but decades before the opening of the Doors tape vaults, that sound from L.A. Woman was most obvious on "The Purpose of Existence Is?" on this solo effort. Yes, Ray Manzarek veers off into his jazz leanings; given the players on this, how could he not? But he gives enough of a taste of past glories to make The Golden Scarab accessible, spoon feeding his musical styles to those who couldn't get enough of the music he was associated with. It's dramatic and cohesive, making more sense than Jim Morrison much of the time, with more controlled insanity. It is amazing that such a fine work as The Golden Scarab escaped the masses, and shameful that classic hits stations don't add this to their incessant repertoire. Had Jim Morrison lived, this is the path the music of the Doors should have taken. Smooth and demanding of repeated spins. - allmusic.com

Debashish Bhattacharya – Beyond the Ragasphere (2013)

http://depositfiles.com/files/idkt47usp

Here is a boldly original fusion experiment from the virtuoso Indian instrumentalist who designed his own slide guitars so they could match the intricacies of the sitar. Now, Debashish Bhattacharya has expanded his range with a set that includes vocal work from his teenage daughter, Anandi, tabla players who worked with Ravi Shankar, and collaborations with very different guitarists from around the world. There’s an India-flamenco clash with Spanish guitarist Adam del Monte on Indospaniola, and a swinging workout with the US bluegrass dobro star Jerry Douglas on JD2 Pillusion. Best of all, despite its rather twee title, is A Mystical Morning, an inspired 16-minute workout in which he trades guitar lines with the great John McLaughlin, who famously explored Indian styles with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti in the 1970s. They ought to record a full album together. — guardian

Claude Hay – I Love Hate You (2013)

FOR ANYONE IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS - GET ON DOWN TO THE BLUES ON BROADBEACH FESTIVAL AND CHECK OUT CLAUD HAY. SAW IN THE LOCAL RAG TODAY THAT HE'S FEATURING HIS NEW BUILD, MADE FROM A $7 BAKING TRAY.

Blues players have come from many places but probably only one has originated in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, Australia, which brings us to Claude Hay. He is a one-man music machine as he plays just about every instrument on his albums and in concert. He is proficient on the slide guitar, sitar, bass, and drums and is able to combine them into sophisticated music to support his compositions. He even takes it a step further as he built his own double-neck guitar. He is, at his core, a blues artist but now extends his sound in a hard rock direction and every once in a while adds in some funk rhythms. He has just released his third studio album, I Love Hate You. His music has continued to evolve. The lyrics have become more sophisticated with the passage of time and his guitar improvisations and riffing are more prominent. He was influenced by many rock and blues artists of the 1980s and those influences are beginning to show through a harder edge. Through it all his slide guitar carries the sound.
As the album title implies, the lyrics explore such topics as love, great performances, transportation problems, terrible customer service, and even issues with radio programmers, all of which fit the love and hate theme of the album.
The album begins with the title track and rocks right out of the gate as he expresses his feelings about people, both positive and negative. “Close” travels in a different direction as it is a laid-back track that meanders along. Tracks such as “Stone Face,” “Blues Train,” “Narrow Mind,” and “Hound” all contain his unique brand of blues and rock.
The only non-original track is a cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together.” He energetically rolls though the song with some fine guitar work that moves the performance in a blues direction.
Claude Hay is a noted blues musician in his home country of Australia and has been gaining attention in the United States. I Love Hate You is a fine album that will only enhance that reputation. If you like your blues with a hard edge, then this will be an album for you.

Kim Salmon & Spencer P.Jones – Runaways (2013)
Australian rock and roll veterans Kim Salmon (The Scientists) and Spencer P Jones (Beasts of Bourbon and Paul Kelly & the Coloured Girls) will soon release their first, and perhaps only, album Runaways, due out this Friday, 15th February.
The beginnings of Runaways date back to early 2012 when Salmon and Jones played together at grimy rock stalwart The Old Bar in Melbourne for a month-long residency. During their tenure, the duo developed an assortment of covers both classic, like I Need Somebody by The Stooges, and modern, a la Runaway by Kanye West. The pair also wrote a handful of originals, including bluesy lead single A Bitter Projection, which would go on to form the backbone of Runaways.

His stage performance is an experience in itself. With more than 2000 shows performed including major music festivals throughout Australia and Canada, the musician shows no signs of slowing down. The raspy vocals of lead frontman Mason Rack have been described by fans as one on the sexiest voices in the blues music scene with flashes from Tom Waits and Led Zeppelin.
