I would say in general for superior tone, just like you use a flat pick to play acoustic bluegrass guitar, using finger picks for finger style makes the same sense. Especially playing banjo and resonator instruments. These instruments need a good strong attack to energize the skin/cone. If you start out with them, you will grow with them. Adding them later can be just as frustrating. Keep this in mind, Bottleneck style is actually finger style with bottleneck technique added. So focusing on your right hand technique and using your fingers to fret notes first make make the process easier. Then when you are comfortable finger picking adding the bottleneck technique will be easier. Of course, if you find the finger picks too difficult, you can add them later, but I would suggest giving them a real good try first. Enjoy.

the you tube link is the sound check on the tri-can resonator with the biscuit piezo, that is what i tried to do with the first link, oops hope you don't mind the links on yer page godzilla,if you do i think you can x them out. check out the tone and tell me if you like it and i,ll tell you how i achieved that tone if you would like more info on it,thank you for the comment.
  • bairfoot cajun

the secret is in the can placement godzilla haaaaaaaa and i also made the coverplate and it was zero cost and you can make your own coverplates too. if you look on my page at the pics i did a pictorial that shows every step i used to make that particular coverplate.if you need any help or any explinations on the coverplate makings i would be glad to help you learn to make them.

Thanks for the comment on the cedar guitar. Yes I had seen your design to house the pre amp unit. Very slick design by the way. Do you have any problem removing the battery?

Godzilla:  Thank you for the friend request.  I look forward to staying in touch with you and to learn from what I see on your site.  You do a great job, and very creative.  I'll be glad to lay down a few lines for you, just let me know.  If you are interested, check out my blog http://TotalRojoGuitars.blogspot.com to see other stuff (archive posts).

Godzilla, I just noticed you're from Vista.  I lived in San Diego for several years, and striped a lot of SoCal cars and bikes, then off to the desert near Palm Springs for R&R, until I could no longer resist the grandkids.  Oh, the SoCal weather is so inviting.
  • JUJU

hiya mate thanks for the comment on the Tricone as regards your question about attaching the neck well the box sides are pretty thick anyway as it's a reso the box aint as important as a standatd acoustic as it's the cones that produce the sound kinda like a speaker backwards - the cones fire the sound into the box and the box amplifies it you also get sound from the front side of the cones - coverplate side but this is more high - mid tones - when you play the guitar it's pretty quite from the players position but when your facing the front of the guitar it's loud as shown in the video

heres a pic of the neck inside the box there are two little bracings maybe i did not need these but i added them just incase as i have used heavy Resonator strings on the build 16 - 56 gauge -as with the first reso i build i added a tension bar from the neck to the butt i think this adds the susssssssstain

  • jabes

thanks for the welcome, just watched acouple of vids, thanks again. i 've been looking at your photos, wow .
  • Jefferson Harris

Thank you for the comment! The crosses turned out better than I expected.
  • Jefferson Harris

That Is a nice one! I don't have the patience to do that kind of work! HaHa That is Awesome!
  • George Yeager

I felt the same way. That was my first vid. It was a lot of fun. Just kind of turned my phone on while I was screwing around. Next time i might plan something. You should get going. I want to see some of those masterpieces in action!!
  • Jim Junksville Sharkey

Thanks for the comments Eric, I'm very new new to the scene but loving building and playing. A little different to slapping the double bass which is my main instrument.
  • George Yeager

Wow, Eric! I just took a look at your "Confessional" shots and that thing is wicked!! Everything about it looks sharp. The box is one of the nicest handmade boxes I've seen. Gorgeous neck and fretboard. Saddle, perfect. You nailed this one buddy!! If God plays CBGs, and I'm pretty sure he does, I know he's got his eye on this one!
  • olds sleeper

  • Soul Cat Guitar Uke and Amp

    Very tasteful work.
  • Soul Cat Guitar Uke and Amp

You did better than I did. The best I got was $42. How many did you buy at a time?I was looking into having these guys build uke necks for me but I never heard back.

If you get to Seattle, write me and I'll buy you a beer.
  • Soul Cat Guitar Uke and Amp

I could do that inlay easily....with a CNG router and some resin....lol
I've had good luck with them also they really are a value and people seem to like the inlay...
Seattle is a strange place, I have a love hate relationship with it but right now I'm ready to take off. It's the 9 months of gray that tear me down. And I really want to learn how to surf before I get too old....
  • Rob (Uker) Porras

Wow. I was just checking out your pictures. The attention to detail is tremendous.
  • john terrell
