If you enjoy three string guitars, this is the place!

Hi Folks, This is the group to share everything about the three string guitar.

If you have had problems in the past playing regular guitar, try playing a three string guitar, they are much easier and the have a vintage sound that is super unique and easy to capture that old school blues sound.

There is another website on the net that has a lot more 3 string guitar information. Here is the link to the website  3-string-guitar.com

25.5" is equivalent to a big Martin. Martin strings are cheap and easy to find, but any "standard" acoustic strings should do. I recommend light or extra light strings so you don't put as much tension on your homemade neck (which probably doesn't have a steel rod reinforcing it.)

For my first 2 builds, I bought a set of six strings and used 'em for 2 guitars. Bass strings E-A-D I tuned to D-A-D for a gutsy, mellow low sound. Treble strings G-B-E I tuned to F#-A-D--which is a tuning I like for high lead or quiet accompanying chords. If you don't like the F#, you can tune it on down to D to gave you a D-A-D tuning on the high strings, but it may start to buzz because it's so slack

Lotsa' guys on this board seem to pick the A, D, and G strings out of the middle of a 6-string pack and tune them G-D-G--which sounds like your D-A-D only it's in the key of G instead of the key of D. This is a nice, mellow range of sounds on any guitar.

Once you've decided which tuning you like, our host Ben (CB Gitty) will sell you 3-string sets with just the strings you need. See his catalog online for beaucoups info on strings and how they sound.

I am working on my first 3 string license plate guitar. It has a 25.5" scale length. What is a good tuning to start with, and what size strings should I use? I was going to use acoustic guitar strings

yeah I agree, experimentation is the best way to discover, when ever and Idea comes to your head,.....try it....Never ask ...because if some give you a negative comment or review, it might detour you and stop you from trying and finding something great!... do it!

I just added a page for related information for a Nylon-strung acoustic 3 string guitar project to my website.  I'll be adding more content shortly, but at least it's up!

What kind of strings did they use on the old time jazz boxes?

Has anyone tried them?  I don't want to spring for a set to find out they are dead sounding.
