Pete, can you give us a bit more detail about what you mean when you say the frets are so far out as to be uneconomical to get it sorted. Is it the position of the frets in terms of their distance up or down the neck that's wrong? (which would be difficult to sort) Or is it a case of the action being so bad that the note is bent out of tune when you press the string down into contact with a fret? (In which case, if it can't be fixed by adjusting the bridge height, it would suggest the neck set is bad or the neck is overly bowed).
There are very few guitars that are utterly beyond redemption. At the very least it sounds like you're got something that could be great for slide playing...keep or discard strings as you please and tune to whatever tuning sounds good.
Do you have a picture you can post?

If the action on your LP copy is totally irredeemable (ie you can't get the bridge low enough), put on a REALLY tall nut and use it for lap steel. The "Windsor" banjos sometimes fetch a decent price (the tenors and ukes), but the 'zither' banjos aren't very popular these days.

I have a Les Paul shaped guitar that is as new, but unplayable. When I had more time I used to live on ebay and buy and sell guitars among other stuff.
This was one of my failures, as the frets are so far out as to make it uneconomical to get it fettled and I wouldn't sell it on to some unsuspecting buyer.
The unusual feature is that it it is an archtop electro acoustic, but with the Les Paul shape and pickup configuration. Adjustable bridge and tail peice on the end of the body. I have written this off as a playable guitar but it sounds nice plugged in (on the frets that don't buzz!) Any ideas what to do with it.
My first thought is to remove at least 3 strings and use it for slide.
It is only a cheap chinese guitar, so it wouldn't be worth breaking for spares.
It has a glued-in neck.

Hi Junk,
I don't play bango and didn't see the clip but I have an old banjo given to me because it had been mutilated by someone who replaced the brace rod that goes inside the drum but fixed it in wrong. It then had about a 1" high action!!
Hmm slide banjo?
Anyway this neck has six tuners. The fifth string goes inside the neck at the fifth fret and comes out behind the nut. An old book I was given by the same guy calls this a zither banjo. More generally they have a tuning peg alongside the fifth fret. The neck was used by manufacurers so they could economise and use a six string guitar neck fittings to build a banjo.
The one I have has 'The Windor' No 1 embossed on the neck by the 19th fret.
I have codged it up to get a sound out of it but the wood is still touching the velum on the inside.

Guys, Iv just had a curry for tea, and it nearly brought a tear to my eye. Last time I had curry was with 'The Boys' down in brum!

The thing that baffled me about that banjo was that the headstock looked like it accommodated 6 strings while the neck had a "step" in the side like a 5-string banjo.

I agree "Don't Go West was a storming number. I'll certainly be watching that again on the iPlayer to see if I can pick it up.

Yup it was. Anyone know how to get the video from the BBC site onto the nation? Naz? Think you did it before?
The last track he performed (Dont Go West) is my personal 'performance of the year' - stunning!
