I sanded a nice curve into the side of my fret press block and now it works great for radiused and flat fret boards. However, I pulled a little too hard on the cheap plastic handle and broke one off. Wish I had an old reloader press about now. :)

Spend a great deal of time here just reading all the info. fret press idea, while reading about using the drill press, i had a vision of using my single stage reloader press for the same purpose. I have an old Dillon single and it would work great for this process. Maximo

Have you tried the Sidewinder on the plastic bobbins yet?

I saw it at Wally World-18$. Was giving it strong consideration, just didn't know if I really needed it since I wind on one of my lathes.

anyone ever work with a Dupli Carver?  I have a chance to buy one on the cheap... (well expensive enough to make me sweat... $ 300 for one that retails for $ 1400+....

What to know if they sound as good as the ads.

thanks,

Just thought this might give someone a chuckle. I only got interested in making CBGs last summer. In fact I knew nothing of them before stumbling across one of John McNair's videos on YouTube, probably some time in August. About a year earlier I sold some equipment that I had had for around 25 years. One item was a David Dowling pantograph engraving machine (see pic).

I bought it for a project but never used it and it just sat around gathering dust. I was thinking the other day that if I still had it I could have had some fun making decorative patterns on guitars. Oh well!

Always glad to share any info I can. Hope it helps you in some way.

DrByte, Great idea with the steel string cut offs. I was just thinking bout ordering me a set of tools that would cut the nut and bridge. You saved me some money. Thanks for sharing the information. It is funny you mentioned the tiny drill bits---to clean out welding tips. I was in the hardware store last week, and was looking for the tiny drill bits---couldn't find the regular bits. The clerk suggested me trying to use the tiny drill bits you are talking bout. You are right, they are very tiny. I think they will work fine. I haven't tried them yet. That was a nice find. I had never seen anything like them. Learn and see something new every day. Thank you again for sharing information with us.

I did pick up one of those little drills last weekend - just haven't had the right excuse to us it yet. It does look like the bees knees for tiny holes though. The cut-offs is a good tip too - thanks!

They are great little gadgets aren't they.  Have you seen the little ones that look like drill bits in an aluminum or steel handle. The handle is like a mini pin vise and the bits go down to about the size of a straight pin. These bits are great for tiny tuner screws and other tiny trim screw pilot holes. And they're dirt cheap. I keep two or three around the shop.  Also the cut-offs from steel stings make great nut groove files for good fitting string grooves, lots of different sizes readily available and good for a few uses then tossed out.  I save all the old steel strings I can get for this and for making cleaning pins for small orifices in carburetors or stoves or furnaces. They're a real life-saver sometimes.
