I have been using pieces of piano hinge for tail pieces. With the box size I am using they work really well. This is a drilling jig I made up for drilling the string and mounting holes. this one is for a six string. I have one for a 4 or 3 string.HInge and jig ready to go JIg folded up and ready for drilling
I wanted to do some fret radiusing but did not want to pay for the sanding board. I made a compass from some 1/4" stock and carved a convex 16" radius sanding board. Then I glued some sandpaper to it and I used that and set up a shooting board to make the concave 16" radius board. A little spray glue and I had a fret sanding board for 16" radius. I also did one for 12" radius. I just used an old 2"x 3" for the boards. They are not perfect but they work.Positive and negative Top View
That wine cork is a fantastic idea. I bet "Bastardo" wine gives you a pretty mean hangover ;-)
Aye, that IS a great idea! And now to make some depth-stop blanks. ...glug glug glug...hic.
That cork stop is one great Idea. I used it for my tuner holes and it worked perfect. I cut it to depth with no chuck marks GREAT...
Makes it fun collecting the materials to make the drill stops out of too.
Here is a handy drill depth stop I made using a wine bottle cork. Drill trough cork , then trim it to leave the amount of bit you want exposed and drill away without going too deep. Perfect for slotted headstocks.
Doesn't really qualify as a "special" tool, but I couldn't do without it. My father's old benchtop sander is at least forty years old and is the workhorse of my shop. (Well, I guess that does make it "special".
Lately I noticed that it just wasn't sanding square though, so I took a staight-edge to the platten and was shocked at how much it had worn! So I flipped a 50-grit belt inside out, ran it with a piece of dead-flat marble as a weight, and finished up with flat files and emory cloth. That tuneup gave me a flat, square sanding surface again. (I sprayed the platten with black lacquer so I could see my progress, like block sanding a car.) It took about two hours and was worth every minute.
Going......
Going....
Gone....
smart idea Sam!
