Preamp for rod piezo?

Hi,I just tried my first rod-piezo, mounted under the saddle of the bridge.  I was rather underwhelmed. The sound was just fine, a bit more mellow than my usual disc type piezo, but the volume was so…Continue

I mounted (glued) my piezo inside the box just under the bridge (on the underside of the neck actually as the neck runs completely through the guitar).  Very trebbly sound out of it...not a full sound at all...more like a banjo.  I started out with a Radio Shack Piezo run through a 500K volume control. BTW...I didn't remove the piezo from the plastic housing.  Just glued the piezo housing inside the box, to the underside of the neck just under the bridge.  The amp that I tested the guitar through is a Line 6 Spider IV 30.

Bill / Michael : Actually im doing the same, i just conected both of my piezos in paralell and so far sound is good enough for me (maybe not good enough for concert). For the moment im looking also for the best place to glue them but i suspect also the bridge area will be the one with more sound gain.

Yea, just the piezo on the guitar, no volume or tone, just a jack. I use a Roland micro cube fro an amp and a lm386 homemade cigar box amp and they both work well. The local music shop has plugged them into much larger amps and they work.

Thanks for the info Michael.  Are you running the pups straight into a guitar amp???

Bill, I'm using the small 20m I think piezo from gitty.  I use 2 wired in parralel and mount them up in the bridge. I tried them in the box and found the bridge mounting is louder thru the amp. the 2 wired together seems to cut the feedback out a lot also. I do not use a pre amp, just straight into the amp and it works fine.

This is a handy little circuit that I've built into many audio projects and will work well with a piezo.  Gain is about 3X max (as if you need more gain with a piezo).  The buffer stage, R1, acts as an impedance match for the piezo while providing a low impedance drive source for the amp J2.  P1 is a 10K trimer pot.  Simply adjust the trimmer for a drain voltage of 4.5 - 5v and everthing should work great.

True...acoustic guitars don't sound very good through an electric guitar amp.  I'll patch it through my PA and see how that sounds.  Still I'm going to run the piezo signal through a buffer to better match the piezo impedance to that of a typical PA/Guitar amp in put.  The next CGB I build will have both piezo and magnetic pups.

Never use a heavy cable for piezo. I tried didn't work for me.

Always look that soldering is not messy and not angle.

I know that piezo needs acoustic amp for acoustic sound.

From electric guitar amp is not quite electric guitar sound and acoustic guitar sound.

Here's a shot of the input and output waveforms in LTSpice.  The input waveform 1v peak, and output in green.  You see there is some gain.
