Ah. more winds. Thanks, Eric. I  knew someone who knew what they were talking about would show up sooner or later.

With wire gauge, higher numbers means thinner wire. common AWG 42 is 0.63mm diam, AWG 43 is .056mm and AWG 44 is .050mm, (about .0020").

Thiner wire is harder to wind a tight coil without breakages, and can be a little trickier to solder without melting.

44 would work fine as far as the pickup goes. The finer wire means less copper in the coil for the same turns and aproximate output as for bigger wire.  Less copper and greater DC resistance will change the inductance of the coil, and so the frequency response of the pup, but quite possibly not in a bad way.

It would certainly be a harder way to learn, but just think how easy it will be when you come to wind your first pup with 42G!

should read: "with whatever consequences go with that".

I think it just means you get fewer winds with whatever cissus CSS go with that. Lower output??

I'm just starting to pick up some parts for winding my own pickups.  At a shop yesterday I ran across a 5 pound spool of 44 AWG wire for $50 which I'm thinking is a darn fine price.  Seems like everybody uses 42 AWG wire, maybe 43... but I've never seen anybody using 44 AWG that I'm aware of.  Is there any reason why 44 AWG wire wouldn't work? Anything I should know about using it?

Hi everyone, I'm going to be participating in the CBN Skype conference this Sunday March 27, 3pm EDT. I think there might be still be a few slots open if you want to stop by and ask me a question.

cool beans, I might find one in the father-in-laws tools.

You're welcome Colin.  I would say the best system is to use a multimeter, yes.  There would be no end of other ways, but that's the most accurate and least invasive. even a $10 cheapy would do, and very handy for future wiring conundrums.

By switchable boost, I mean...

If a single coil pickup is wired with an extra wire (tap) connecting to a point somewhere within the coil, you can take your output from only one part of the winding by shorting the other part out, or use the whole winding for more output.  Seymour duncan has this as an option on various pickups as do other makers. google 'tapped single coil'.

Yes. And honestly eric I'm not even sure this is a p90. lol, I do not remember where I got it. That is the closest pup I can compare it to. If I do not have a multimeter is there another way to decipher the wiring? I am not sure what the switchable boost means...but I love google so...I will have to see which way the pup screams.
