Hey Wes Thanks for the info.  Got a few amps, eh?

Comment by John Hopper on December 29, 2011 at 9:05am

I have a reso ukulele and want to build a small to moderate size bass amp.  How do it start and what do i need?  This new territory for me.  I have a piezo in my uke and the box is sealed.   Is hard to put volume control and or tone control in the amp.  Are there any bonehead instructions somewhere within this group.  Thanks, jh

CB, (Ben). I will be getting those in the future. I needed one today so i could ship an amp today. The darn cheap pot went bad after 5 minutes of testing. I have used your 250K pots on a guitar and the quality is top notch. Not to mention Bournes pots get good reviews on other sites too. I ended up with an Alpha from the Shack with a 2 inch post that I had to cut down. But now it works and is shipped! lol gripe gripe..tis the season.. etc.

Michael, I have 10K linear taper Bourns pots in stock. They are some of the best pots out there, definitely shouldn't be wearing out fast.

Just need to vent, cheap pots that go bad with very little use really stink!!  Now next time I will not be so cheap and get the better ones.  Do you think I can find a simple 10k pot in the local shops? Of course not. Thanks for letting me vent.

Mark my expertise is one that i understand what you are explaining. However, I have not put that type of wiring into action. I am thinking that trying the pot might work easier for me than spending all that time, I do not really have, on a fixed tone. Thank you for all your input, it has given me a lot to think on.

Sorry, I just realized we started out discussing piezos, then I kinda wandered off.

To clarify a little, I am aware that some guys have figured out tone circuits that work with piezos, but so far the only ones I am certain of arent sharing much of what they have learned.

It might be far easier to use on board or outboard preamps with tone controls designed for use with piezos, unless you are willing and able to do some experimenting.

The idea I proposed would go between the wires of a mag pup as follows:

Tee into the red wire, add a resistor (of the measured value of the pot setting you want to duplicate) then the tone capacitor then tee into the black wire. Someone might say I am nuts, but I am fairly certain this should work.

It may also work with just a capacitor, if you choose the right rating, I am a little less sure of the effect of this idea.

And some combination of one of the above, but with radically different cap and/or resistor ratings may be just the ticket for an "improved" piezo circuit. Thats where some real trial and error experimentation might be needed.

A little help? Anyone?

I have a resistor cascade box, could either rig up a capacitor cascade or just experiment with a half dozen (or so) different ratings and see what happens. Hmmmmm. Simply dont have enough time right now!

Colin, it is a little hard to describe stuff like this well in words, and I have no pictures, and on top of that I have little idea of your electronics knowledge, so it may be difficult to explain. Maybe someone else might chime in here as well.

Two more things, first, this is based on theory on my part, as I havent really experimented with this idea.

Also, to be clear, we are talking about a mag pup circuit  here, as normal tone circuits have little or no effect on a piezo. I have heard theres a way, but again, I dont know about this. It is my understanding that a few guys are using capacitors of a much different rating to shape the sound, but I have no specifics.

A potentiometer is just a variable resistor. A common tone circuit shunts a variable amount of signal through the tone capacitor to ground.

My theory is that if you had a tone setting you liked, but wanted a clean exterior, you could have a built in circuit to duplicate that setting.

One way I know would work, would be to begin with a normal tone circuit temporarily hooked up, find the setting you like and measure the resistance of the pot at that setting and install a fixed resistor of that same resistance, and the tone capacitor in the pup circuit between the output wire and ground.

Maybe one of the guys here who uses MS Paint or another graphics program could help out and post a wiring diagram sketch of the idea.

Myself, I would want to experiment with some different cap ratings as well, just out of curiosity.

How would I do a cap w/o the pot? Would it just be wired to the jack or more of an in-between two wires? I do not have the setup necessary for a high tech tone experiment so it would just be a slap it on a roll with it situation.
