Comment by Ben "C. B. Gitty" Baker on February 7, 2012 at 3:53am: Generally audio tapers are used for volume and either audio or linear for tone. Audio taper gives an increase pattern that is more natural to the human ear, while linear taper gives an even rate of increase which can seem more sudden. It does seem strange that they would put audio on tone and linear on volume. Could have been a mistake in manufacturing... you see that sort of thing fairly often with cheap knock-off parts. While it would work, you'd probably get better results if you swap them.

Comment by Habanera Hal on February 7, 2012 at 2:39am: I was scrounging through my parts bin this morning looking for a volume/tone setup for my current build which is using a 4 pole single coil mag pup. Found a pre-wired combo I got a long time ago that came as part of a Fender Jass Bass knock off. I just noticed that the tone pot is a 500k audio taper (the cap is a green chicklet marked "2A473J") and the volume pot is 500k linear taper. Should I switch out the vol pot to audio taper? Why would it be a linear taper to begin with?

an easy way to test this without unsoldering/soldering would be to hook up a jumper across the pot tabs, shunting the circuit directly to the jack (bypassing the pot)
